Running a cafe can be so rewarding, but one of the most challenging aspects is often finding menu items that your customers will enjoy and keep coming back for. Of course there are the typical options, like pastries and muffins, but what if you want to take a healthier approach? Here are four versatile, easy-to-prepare dishes to consider including on your menu.

1. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a very healthy choice, and it is easy to make in large batches. You can make one big pot of classic oatmeal each morning and then ladle it into a bowl a portion at a time as it is ordered. Allow customers to customize their oatmeal by choosing from a list of toppings. Blueberries, chocolate chips, cinnamon, sliced banana, strawberries, and raisins are all easy to keep on hand. You can also offer a "special" oatmeal bowl, which changes each week. For instance, one week you can offer peanut butter and jelly oatmeal, and the next week you could feature apple cinnamon oatmeal.

2. Egg White Scrambles

Eggs are a cafe classic, but this approach puts a new spin on them. Offering an egg white scramble makes for a healthier option since egg whites are lower in fat than whole eggs but pack plenty of protein to keep customers full and satisfied. You can offer a whole list of different ingredients that customers can add to their scramble. Let them choose three per order to keep ordering streamlined and simple. Good, healthy add-ins include the following:

  • Green onions
  • Mushrooms
  • Bell peppers
  • Garlic
  • Broccoli
  • Feta cheese
  • Spinach
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Salsa

The sky is the limit! If there is an ingredient you already have in your cafe and it sounds like it would be good in an egg white scramble, add it to the list.

3. Avocado Toast

Avocado toast sounds like a pretty straight-forward dish, and it is — but there are also many ways you can allow customers to customize it. Let them choose their toast option from choices like whole wheat bread, bagels, or English muffins. Also, let them choose additional toppings to have placed on top of the avocado. Slices of turkey or vegan bacon, sauteed mushrooms, sliced onion, lox, and bell pepper are all good options.

Try adding one or more of the versatile options above to your cafe menu. Customers will love being able to add their own toppings or mix-ins to the breakfasts they order.

About Me
Improving Your Specialty Foods Selection

When I started working in my uncle's grocery store, I realized his business model was a little outdated. Instead of adjusting his inventory to the times, he was still carrying products that nobody was buying, and this model was hurting business. I decided to update things with a fresh infusion of specialty foods. I met with a few vendors to discuss what they could bring in, and it was amazing to see how much they offered. We filled our shelves with interesting, high-quality products, and our customers loved everything. This blog is all about specialty foods, so that you can see why updating is important.
